comfort cookies story

I love these comfort cookies because they remind me of my dad and grandparents. One of my fondest memories as a young girl was visiting my grandparents around the age of six or so. I remember flying stand by from Utah by myself to visit them in Alabama. Well, with some sort of airport escort to make sure I made it from check-in to gate to plane safely. As I look back on this I feel amazed at my independence and being confidently capable of flying across the country at a such a young age!

My grandparents, at the time, had several pecan bushes on their property. I loved crawling under the shaded leafy branches to pick pecans and to cool off from the hot sun and humidity. Then the joy of spending time with my grandmother who helped me crack them open to enjoy. Making these cookies teleports me to our times spent together. This is why I love cooking and creating recipes because food is powerful and healing as it is nourishing in the ways it brings family, friends, and communities together.

Growing up and even today, pecans have consistently been apart of my life and consider them family, as they are traditionally and lovingly sent every year for the holidays. Recognizing the importance of maintaining connection and relationships consistently outside of that realm. I was inspired to make this Comfort Cookie recipe, so that we may stay connected through what brings us together everyday; food and love.
